The official meaning of Blitzkrieg is "lightning war". Blitzkrieg is a tactic based on speed and surprise, first used by the Germans in World War 2. A blitzkrieg needed a military firce based around light tanks supported by airplanes and infantry.
The blitzkrieg tactic was developed by Hans Guderian, a German officer. He originally made a propoganda pamphlet called "Achtung Panzer", the pamphlet then got in to the hands of Hitler. The ironic part of the blitzkrieg tactic is that it's based on the idea's of a France and a Britain officer.
The blitzkrieg tactic left a devastating result in the first few years of the World War 2 which resulted in the rapitaly push back of Britisch and French forces in a matter of weeks (Beaches of Dunkirk).
In the beginning of the Second World War, the Britain and France forces still had a lot of tactics and materials in use of the First World War. Especially their tanks had no influance on the major power of the German panzers. The Britisch forces were based on protecting an island, something which wasn't useful in the battles against German troops as they couldn't rely on naval support.
